The lineup

As a cultural aside, we had an interesting dynamic in the China Visa Centre on Thursday. When we got there we were impressed by the shiny new entrance and huge waiting area (with comfortable seats!). But there were two lines to get into initially. At the front of the two lines was one clerk who would look over your documents before giving you a number. We were sent to Line Two. In Line One were at least 5 people already waiting. As we stood there thinking we would be waiting at least 5 peoples’ worth of time, the clerk looked up and called us forward. That sent several of the other people in Line One into fits, demanding to know why they were still waiting. But we went anyway. Why?

In China the bureaucrat rules! The person may seem like a lowly entry clerk, but their word can make or break your own attempts at whatever you are doing. In our case, let’s say we did what a good Canadian would do: We would say, “Oh no, please, these others were before me, we can wait.” But this would communicate the opposite of the intended meaning. Instead of appearing as polite people, we in fact would be telling the clerk that we think she did something wrong, either by not noticing those already waiting, or by not serving them first. And by saying it publicly we would also be putting her down, in essence, in front of those waiting. Those waiting would feel justified in their outrage and further berate the clerk. Pandemonium.

Her reaction would likely be as follows: She would stare at us, then glare at us, and proceed to serve everyone else, even those who came even later, and make us wait as retribution for our public rebuke of her. Once she ran out of excuses to ignore us, she would also have decided to make things difficult for us. All in all, in a moment of supposed Canadian politeness could turn everything upside down! So it pays to know a culture, and to follow its rules when need be.

The saga continues

If you have been reading the blog posts you will have been on a rollercoaster with us.

Let me start with the obvious… we still do not have our visas. Despite receiving what we thought were all the documents we needed via email, it was not enough. The new China Visa Centre website stated that printouts of photos of documents would suffice, but in our case they want the originals. We notified the school, and now we wait for 1 or 2 weeks for those to get here. They willed be mailed. Please pray that all the originals we need come at the same time.

But the biggest hurdle has been cleared. That was being cleared for a Work Permit. We needed several other documents, but the big one we were waiting on was the Work Permit. This is the first time we’ve used this term I think, and that is because we too are learning about the process as we go. Without the Work Permit it would not matter what the school or anyone else did, we would not be able to get a visa in China as a teacher. Now that we have been given a Work Permit that means we can. But it carries with it other ramifications!

You may recall that we have at times said that our time looks to be limited in China given how many years we have already been there on student visas, and other types. Well, we have never had Work visas before. And what this new Work Permit does is give us up to TEN more years, at least, of visas in China. We have, at times, thought we had at most 2 or 3 years more. So we will need to prayerfully consider our next options over the next decade. (Of course, the schooling of the children comes into play too, as in 10 years Liberty will be 18! and Van will be 15!) But that is content for another, much later, post._-1322167717_1446130016409_1446130035000_wifi_0

Funeral

It is with sadness we announce that Michelle’s paternal grandmother passed away in her sleep Thursday at 10 pm, Oct 16, 2015.

We will be driving down to Jacksonville, TX, for the funeral, and to be with family during this sad time. Michelle’s brother and his wife live near Jacksonville, but her sister Melissa had to fly in from Thailand.

We expect to take 2 days to drive down, the funeral is Tuesday, we will stay a few more days, then depart to drive back to Hamilton.

Please pray for safety.

Friends

Overseas we often experience some very cool encounters. You may have heard me tell of some. For example, one day I woke up with this one Kazak guy I had met years and years ago on my mind. But how would I ever find him? I met him during my first time overseas, and here I was in my third term, married, in a different part of the city doing something completely different. Well, I prayed God would do something, and then went out.

It was to the bank I had to go for rent was due. This means we use the ATM to withdraw renminbi. On this particular day I decided to try a new bank near our home, thinking it might save me some time. I stuck my Canadian debit card in, punched in the pin, waited…. and realized the machine had taken my card! Argh! What was hoped to be a time-saver was now turning into something I thought would suck the rest of my day out of my hands.

I managed to pray, calm down, and tried to call the number on the ATM sign but of course no one answered. Usually it is no use to go into the branch because everyone there will hum and haw and claim to not know what to do. But I felt compelled to try. In I went, saw the usual stiffening of everyone’s spines as they spy a real live foreigner walk in, and I head towards the most managerial looking person I can find. They can’t escape. I pull out another card, and with miming motions indicate that their ATM took my card and could I have it back. They reply, as far as my Chinese can discern, that they need their manager to check for me. Ok. I wait.

A few minutes later out of the office walks the very same Kazak guy about whom I had been thinking about that morning. The same Kazak guy who I thought for sure I would never be able to find. I didn’t even remember his home town. Him. Here. Right in front of me. And if I was surprised, you can imagine how shocked he was because he also had woken up that morning wondering if he’d ever see his old Canadian friend again. As great as it was that I did actually get my ATM card back, thanks to him, it was even more amazing to reconnect with him. God. Did. It.

But you know what is weird. in 20 years I have only ever bumped into an old school friend from Canada, in Canada, once or twice. Being back in Hamilton now, and driving around, going here and there, I would expect I would bump into some of my elementary, or high school, or uni friends. But nope. This only happens overseas. With Kazaks, and the odd Chinese, Mongol or Uighur.

Holding our breath

You may recall that the school official told us that the paperwork would not be ready before October. Here it is, October, and we are in the days during which we are expecting to  get our paperwork. It has been a strange delay. Just this night Liberty said, “This is hard, waiting.” We agree.

So please pray that sometime in the next few days we get our paperwork with which we then can apply for our visa.

Refund, and waiting

Yesterday in a Canadian Supercentre we saw children’s’ winter boots for sale. That made Michelle and I pause and look at each other, both thinking the same thing: We did not expect to be in Canada in Sept/Oct! We actually began leaving way back in June when we went to Texas to visit Michelle’s family. That visit was even cut short a little bit so that we could visit my bro-in-law in North Vancouver in order to be back in Ontario for Aug so that we could be ready to apply for the visas. Then the Great Wait began.

We do keep hearing from one school official who, as far as his emails communicate, is still expecting us any day. But it is the other school official upon whom we wait. Please keep praying that whatever the hold-up is will be cleared up. To be honest we wonder if the number of all our years has finally caught up to us, and some official somewhere said, “Hey, this guy came here in 1997. This lady came here in 1999. No more visas for them!”

But EVEN if that is the case, God can move this mountain. We know there are more people who need to hear, more places that still haven’t heard. So keep praying.

On a different note, we cancelled our plane tickets since the prospect of guessing a wrong departure date seemed too likely. The airline, Hainan Air, has been very helpful throughout, despite horrendous reviews I’ve found online about them. We’ve flown Hainan Air several times and always had a good experience. Well, in this case the refund they gave us is almost 3/4 of what we’ve already paid. My worse-case expectation was that we would only get back 1/4 of what we paid.

QUICK UPDATE

Your prayers are being heard!

To be more precise, our Invitation Letter is not here yet. But what is new is an email from the official preparing our Letter. Not receiving any communication from the school has left us wondering what is going on. Well, the official wrote Sunday night telling us that there have been rule changes, and that it is more complicated to get the Invitation Letter approved. But, she assured us she is working on it. She even told us our apartment has been ready for us since August. She also said that the invitation Letter would not be ready before October.

This means we need to change our plane tickets, again. We are flying Hainan Air, and they have a straightforward policy for rebooking flights, so we are thankful for that. But the official still has not given us a date for which we can prepare.

Please pray with us for some clarity from the school about when we can expect to leave Canada/arrive in China. We really do not want to pick another date and then find out from the school that we guessed wrong. (As an aside, we bought these tickets a long time ago due to incredibly low prices, as well as with the assumption that surely everything would be ready within 3 months. By rebooking twice now we are actually still paying less than if we had not bought any tickets until now. But if we have to rebook a third time, then it will cost more).

To recap: We were due to leave August 20th, but we had to rebook because the official did not have the Letter ready.

We then were scheduled to leave this Sunday, September 20, having thought that the Letter would be ready within a month, but it is not and we are now delayed again.

We do not know what new date to schedule for our departure! It will not be until October sometime.

Some more details

The other day we heard from a friend who is in China, in our city, and she told us there would be a lengthy school holiday coming up. It starts Sept 23 and goes until Oct 7.

If our papers are not ready by Sept 15 it is unlikely we will leave be leaving before Oct 7 because the school holiday means every office closes too. So please pray

Waiting, but busy

Here in Ontario it is the Labour Day holiday, meaning many businesses are closed. Fortunately for me, Starbucks is not one of those places. Why am I at a Starbucks, you ask? Because today is the first day of the Cooke Homeschooling semester. Liberty and Van have started homeschooling today, with Michelle teaching. The living room was set up to resemble a classroom to help the kids stay focused.  We decided to start on this day even though it is a holiday because we had expected to be in China by now, and this is the day Michelle scheduled to be the first day.

Everyone is excited that there is some progress in one area of life for now.
